In light of my new report on Tunisian foreign fighters in Iraq and Syria, I thought I would share a detail that did not make the final cut of the paper.
Many arrested foreign fighters have claimed to have not been involved in fighting or violent activity with IS to lessen their role. Many have claimed that they allegedly were only cooks. While there is rightful skepticism that so many of the arrested are ‘cooks’ and no one that had other roles were arrested, there was indeed an actual Tunisian IS foreign fighter that was a cook for the group. He was Abu Haydar al-Tunisi, who died October 14, 2014 in Wilayat al-Khayr (Deir al-Zour Governorate). Proof below!
